Heena Tattoo - Mahendi

What is Henna Tattoo?

“Henna dye” is a powdered herbal paste made from dried leaves of a flowering plant, Lawsonia inermis. Henna has several uses such as to dye skin, hair, fingernails and fabrics. However, its main use is Henna tattoos, also called mehndi, a temporary staining of intricate motifs done on hands and legs in many parts of Asia and Africa.

Henna tattoos or mehndi is much favored in parts of South East India, Arabia and Africa, often as part of pre-wedding ceremony. The bride and her female relatives and friends apply elaborate designs on hands, arms, foot, legs, neck, shoulders and back. The custom may differ from region to region. For example, in some regions, henna is applied only on hands and feet while in some regions they cover whole arms and legs.

Whatever the region and tradition, henna tattooing is quite popular and is now finding favor with western women as well.

In contrast to permanent tattoos done in tattoo parlors, henna tattoos are temporary and self-fading. The design slowly fades in about 2 to 4 weeks completely. The main benefit of henna is it is completely safe on skin and has no side effects.
